AUCTION SALES IN NORTH AMERICA

After four consecutive years of gains through 2006 in which the total dollar volume of purchases increased 64.6%, the North American Thoroughbred auction market in 2007 pulled back from the record level of the year before as total gross sales declined 2.5%. Gross sales fell in three of the four principal categories; only the broodmare gross, up 11.1% in 2007, showed an increase against prior year results. Against 2006 returns, last year’s gross sales for weanlings fell 13.9%, 2-year-olds declined 11.1% and yearlings dipped 3.0%.
