SIZE OF FIELD AND STARTS PER HORSE (U.S. AND CANADA)

After undergoing a persistent decline through the first half of the 1990s, average field size is largely unchanged since 1997. This coincides with stabilization of the registered foal crop, following nine consecutive years of decline from 1986-1995, and a gradual decrease in the number of races run. In contrast to the recent stability of average field size, the average annual starts per runner has declined 16.3% since 1997 to its lowest level on record in 2007.
